A Dietitian in Marketing

The question I get asked the most is definitely this, “What kind of jobs are there for Dietitians?”. It’s a rapidly growing field, and people are more aware the there is not a one-job-fits-all mentality.

Traditionally, RDs had three roads to choose from: Clinical, Food Service, or Community. During the internship, you quickly realize what isn’t for you. Choosing what you do want to pursue is more difficult – so many choices!

That being said, young RDs are often convinced they have to start in one field or another, “to gain experience”. Now, a lot of us that are considered “young RDs” are speaking up – this isn’t true. In fact, Janel Ovrut wrote a post about it that is definitely worth reading. Point made:

“Now there are more opportunities than ever for dietitians. Anywhere there is food, there is an RD!”

I’ve always maintained my blog/website for my own reasons; the hours are flexible and I enjoy doing it. Yes, sometimes it feels like a part-time job, but not one that I’d ever complain about doing.

Luckily, that work led to something bigger. I began doing presentations on “Blogging & Social Media Networking” for the new intern classes at UMD (now via web-conferences); I presented on Sports Nutrition at a blog conference; I applied for a job at Small Planet Foods.

Now, I’m a Dietitian in Marketing.

I’ve been at the new job for two weeks now, and I love it. The projects are exciting; the people I work with are forward-thinking and open to new ideas; the people we “meet” range from Pro Athletes to Farmer’s Market goers to bloggers, and everyone in between.  I’m also surrounded by these little guys – yes, we’re spoiled.

What do I do? Influencer Outreach Programs. Where do I work? In the larabar office (yes, it’s as fun as it sounds). Who do I work for? All of the Small Planet Foods companies.

Yesterday I watched this video for the first time. I felt lucky to be a part of this, now, as it continues to grow. Take a company you already love, and love it even more. Because here’s how it all started:

Do you have a “dream job” in mind? What would you do to go get it?

Congrats on the new job! It sounds like an amazing opportunity!

  2. God, that sounds like an amazingly awesome job!! Between working for a company like Larabar and a company like Lululemon and those would be my top choices for dream job. I’m in PR and would LOVE to take my PR skills to a company that aligns with my passion for fitness and healthy balanced living. maybe someday soon, maybe. :)

  3. How exciting — congratulations! I love love love love larabars :)

  4. what a fantastic informative post!

I had actually started a dietetics program a couple years ago but decided it wasn’t for me because of the type of jobs you enter into. It’s great to offer an inside look for potential students so really know what they’re headed toward.

    Thanks for sharing! :)

It’s hard to see the “other” options when you’re still in school – teachers/advisers tend to focus SO much on the traditional jobs and direct you towards them. Hopefully you got out for something better suited to You, though! :)

  5. YAY! That sounds so awesome and fun! So great that you landed a gig that sounds so perfect for you!

I really like my job, but it’s definitely not my “dream job”. I would love to get into doing marketing/communications in the health/fitness/organic world somehow. I would also love to freelance write (my side job) full-time. But for right now I’m happy and content with where my career is so I’m just going to hang out for awhile and see where it takes me :)

Your work ethic and drive is no secret – it’s been fun to “watch” you go from college –> working woman so quickly and {as it seems} very successfully! I have no doubt you’ll grab that “dream job” when it comes your way.

I’m not really sure what my dream job would be to be honest. I would love to somehow incorporate my love for healthy cooking into nursing. I also think it would be really cool to go into schools and try to make their school lunches healthier and make a difference when children are young so they can live a full and healthy life!

I don’t know what my dream job would be, I just know what certain elements would entail. As for getting it? That’s exactly why I’m pushing through grad school right now.

Congrats again on the job – so glad you’re loving it!

  8. Your job sounds AWESOME.

  9. girl, you are just living the dream! love it and so many congrats!

  10. oh I love it! You are so good it too! I hate doing clinical work, but passion was in sports and nutrition. Good thing I stuck with that, hehe.

  11. Wow, congrats on the exciting new job!

  12. Congrats Heather! Just watched that whole video — loved it!

  13. Hi! I just came across your blog and love it! I’m current working on my MS/RD (part time. loooong process!). You job sounds great – one of the many things I love about dietetics is that there are so many things you can do! My dream job probably involves working with runners and helping people (low income, espcially) learn how to grocery shop, etc. :)

The field definitely needs people like you!! I know it’s a long process, but it’s definitely worth the hard work!

  14. Awesome! So excited for you! This sounds like an awesome job. You have already worked for some awesome companies. Your future looks so bright. I don’t have my dream job, but as you know I’m constantly scheming and playing with ideas in my head. I’m definitely yearning for a dream job though because I want to work at a place that I’m truly passionate about.

  15. That’s fantastic! Congrats! What a great company to work for :)

  16. I’m happy you love the new job! I feel the public has the ‘old’ dietetics job market trapped in their heads, so when I get the question “what can you do in dietetics?” I answer ” LOTS!”.
My dream job as a RD involves nutrition communication with my ultra- reach goal as a regular nutrition contributor to a magazine or newspaper.

  17. I am so happy for you! Making your dream job become a reality has to be the best feeling. I’m very happy where I am right now and love the opportunities that are presenting themselves to me in nutrition/fitness and writing through my blog and through lulu! I have a dream job in mind. It involves Billy, our kids, and no office. We’re working on it. :)

    • OK, I must not have read this post very thoroughly! Larabars are pretty much my favorite thing in the world. I eat at least one a day – many days two. I am so happy that you’ve truly found your dream job (and most of ours, too!). ;)

You work in the larabar office? That’s so cool.

I actually saw a job posting a few months ago for a graphic designer for Whole Foods corporate. I immediately clicked on it, even though I wasn’t actively looking for a job, but it was already gone. That would be my dream job.

Very cool Heather! It is great to know about all these opportunities. The interns and I really enjoyed your talk and hearing about all your accomplishments.

  20. Very exciting! You are so lucky to be able to do what you love every day. We should all be so lucky!

  21. How exciting! I heard you got a new job, but I didn’t realize it was for my most favorite snack company! Congrats! I’m loving FNIC by the way. I started two weeks ago. I’m taking over some of the USDA Twitter accounts!

  23. Just found this post from your year in review…I am a dietetics senior at JMU and it is so exciting to me to hear about all the opportunities out there for RDs. I looked at UMD’s internship program and I love their technology focus (especially as I’ve gotten into blogging). I don’t think I’ll be able to afford living in the DC area but I hope to continue using social media in my work!
